Common Driving Convictions

A driving conviction carries either a Fixed Penalty Notice (a fine) or a summons to court – depending on the offence or a driving ban. The most common driving offences are speeding, drink driving and using a mobile device whilst at the wheel. Also, driving without insurance is another common driving offence. All driving convictions endorse points on a driving licence. Speeding can carry a minimum of 3 points and a fine. With enough driving licence points, a driving ban can be given by local authorities.

Below are 5 of the most common driving convictions by British motorists.

  • Speeding (SP Offence). Speeding can fall under different severity levels with varying penalties and fines involved. It is the most common driving offence in the UK.
  • Drink driving. Over 100,000 motorists on UK roads fail a breathalyser test each year.
  • Driving on a public road without insurance. Due to financial implications for insurance providers and other road users, this is considered a more serious driving offence.
  • Careless or dangerous driving. This relates to several other motoring convictions, for example, driving well over the speed limit or driving without a licence.
  • Failing to report or stop after an accident. These are two separate offences that even includes seemingly minor offences such as bumping into a parked car whilst driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately, you are deemed a statistically riskier driver to get insurance. This is why insurers tend to increase insurance premiums for drivers even with one driving offence. However, you can make sure you get the cheapest convicted drivers insurance quotes available to you by comparing with Insure Me UK.

It is very important to disclose any driving convictions that you might have whether they are serious or not. If you do not disclose your driving convictions then your convicted driver insurance may be void and will make obtaining insurance even harder and more expensive. Always be truthful when taking out insurance as it also will potentially cause a claim to be rejected.

If you are a banned or disqualified driver due to a driving conviction then the answer is yes. Insure Me UK have a panel of Insurance providers who can find you the cheapest rates on the market. The majority of Driving bans come from Drink Driving (DR10), Drug Driving (DG10), Driving Without Insurance (IN10), Dangerous Driving (DD10) and Totting Up To Many Points (TT99). A Driving Ban can last anywhere from 7 days to 1 year depending how serious the ban is.
